The Christmas Songs Anime Tag

Happy Holidays! As always on special occasions, I would do a tag. This tag is originally created by Hails Hearts Nyc as book tag but I modified it into a anime tag.

Also, yes, I know Christmas is over. But I suck at being on schedule and holiday had been busy.

“You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”

Name a villainous character you couldn’t help but love.

Izaya from デュラララ!! / Durarara!!

He is intelligence and a little bit crazy, which is exactly what I look for in a villain. I love villains who outsmart the audience, have an outlandish philosophy, and still remains charming. Izaya is exactly that. You can never know if he is using you or helping you, or if he is helping you to use you.

“All I Want for Christmas is You”

Which anime do you most hope to see under your Christmas tree?

君の名は。- Kimi no Na wa / Your Name.

I can’t wait to watch this movie! The animation looks amazing from the trailer, and I’m not expecting any less from the story. I don’t normally want to buy anime (I stream, legally) as I don’t rematch them, but this is a work of art and I wouldn’t mind having it in my possession.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”

Name a character that overcomes major obstacles and learns to believe in themselves.

Kiki from 魔女の宅急便 / Kiki’s Delivery Service

The movie follows Kiki on her coming-to-age journey to another city alone, as a part of her witch training. Leaving home and supporting oneself is difficult enough, but facing more obstacles along the way nearly crushed Kiki as she doubts her ability and worth. However, at the end, she overcame her doubt and regain her ability at very last moment. Her transformation symbolises the transforming from girlhood to womanhood, where Kiki had to let go of her childlikeness and becomes an adult.

“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”

a) Which character do you think would be on the top of the naughty list?

Sebastian from 黒執事 – Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler

You know why…

b) Which character do you think would be at the top of the nice list?

Yune from 異国迷路のクロワーゼ – Ikoku Meiro no Croisee / La croisée dans un labyrinthe étranger / Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth

Yune is a Japanese girl who moved to France in late 19th century. On top of being inhumanly cute, she is hardworking, honest, and very, very sweet. She did her best to blend into the French culture (learning French within a very short period of time) without losing touch with her heritage (wearing Kimono despite being in France). When Claude expressed his reluctance in accepting her in front of her, assuming that she couldn’t understand French, she pretended not to understand him just so he wouldn’t feel bad. Santa should really drop off a nice gift for her when he visits France next time.

“Frosty the Snowman”

Which anime just melts your heart?

ユーリ!!! on ICE – Yuri!!! on ICE

I don’t normally like romance in fictions, I often find them quite unrealistic and exaggerated. Yuri on ICE!! is one of the few romance stories I actually enjoyed. The relationship was healthy and realistic, without too many passionate scenes. It didn’t just melt my hard, it made my little fangirl heart explode.

“Feliz Navidad”

Choose an anime that takes place in your country.

The original question was “Choose a book that takes place in a country other than your own.” Which would have been great for books, but not for anime. Unless you are from Japan, this question would be way too easy. For those who really never saw an anime that takes place in your country, you can choose one that takes place in a place that is based on your country or culture (e.g. Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist are both German-themed with German characters; Kiki’s Delivery Service takes place in a fictional city that is based on Stockholm)

彩雲国物語 – The Story of Saiunkoku / Saiunkoku Monogatari

This anime takes place in a fictional country (Saiyunkoku) that is based on ancient China. The clothing, names, architecture, political structures etc. are all very Chinese.

“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

Which holiday themed anime do you use to spread the Christmas joy?

I don’t think there really is a holiday-themed anime… But there are a few holiday themed episodes in ヘタリア / Hetalia?

“Sleigh Ride”

Which fictional character would you choose to spend the holidays with (doesn’t have to be a love interest!)?

Victor from ユーリ!!! on ICE / Yuri!!! on ICE

Of course. It is also his birthday after all. I will make sure to make myself disappear when it is time to give him and Yuri space (wink wink).

“Baby it’s Cold Outside”

Which anime that you didn’t like would you sacrifice to a fire to warm yourself up in the cold?

初恋モンスター – Hatsukoi Monster / First Love Monster

I hate it hate it hate it. I only finished this anime to write a zero star review on it, which you can read here.

“Do you hear what I hear”

Which anime do you think everyone should watch?

銀魂 – Gintama

I feel like it is one of the best animes out there that are too under-rated, in fact it was the best story (not just anime) I have ever seen/read. Which says a lot as I’ve started watching anime when I was 3 and I’ve read Harry Potter. While Gintama is pretty popular and has a very high ranking on sites like myanimelist, it isn’t popular enough to be considered “mainstream”, which is quite a shame. Unlike a lot of mainstream shounen animes, Gintama gets better and better as the character develops, instead of declining in quality as the producers drag it on forever for no reasons, despite running out of ideas. There are barely any unnecessary fan services and the female characters are given the respect they deserve. All characters are unique, complex and unforgettable, even the ones who only appear for one arc.

I feel like a lot of people may have dropped it after watching a few episodes as they were quite silly and random. However, the style slowly transforms from short story arcs that are mainly for comedy to a more serious main plot with a lot of depth, without losing the comedy side of it. If people give it a proper chance they are likely to be sucked into the anime and unable to leave. You won’t fully appreciate it until at least 10 episodes later and by that time it just gets better and better. When you are half-way finished with this anime, you would find yourself laughing till you are breathless and then sobbing uncontrollably within the same episode (of course, I’m not speaking from experience what are you talking about).

Another good news is, it is going to end soon. As sad as it may be, it also means I won’t see this anime going down a spiral of dragging on forever for no good reasons like a lot of other mainstream anime. It’s only 300+ episodes, available for free on Crunchyroll. Please go watch this anime.
